Covid-19 Shenanigans and HNG Internship
O

A Front-end Developer with stories to tell about my journey. If you stick with me, you'll learn something or some things.

Hello, everyone! My name is Onyemowo Akwubo, but if you don't want to bite your tongue, you can call me Mowo.

A very short story, I was a Graduate Engineer in a Solar Company in Nigeria as of March 2020, then the Covid-19 lockdown happened, and I lost my job!!! With no other skills and only basic skills in the Solar Industry, finding another job was a nightmare. Recruitment processes ended in rejection emails or no emails at all. After the umpteenth interview, I began looking for skills that would help me obtain a remote job. Dear All, practically all of my search results listed technical skills as one of the top five. I went on to research tech skills I could relate to, and Web Development caught my attention (Inserts the sound that plays when opening a treasure chest).

I made the final decision to become a Web developer at the end of the first quarter of this year, March 2021; my goal is to become a Full-Stack Web Developer, but I've paced myself and set a timeline to be a frontend Developer (and land a job) by the end of the first quarter of 2022, and a junior Full-Stack Developer by the end of 2022. I've joined a couple of communities for guidance, mentorship, and peer meetups/connections in order to accomplish this.

It was in one of these communities I met Okode Jessica. We've learned a lot from each other and she introduced me to the HNG Internship 8.0, operated by Zuri. This is my first internship as I begin this journey, and I am excited about it as it will make achieving my goal much easier. I am enrolled in the Front-end Development Track and listed below is what I intend to achieve by the end of eight weeks:

  1. Understand Server-Side CSS
  2. Be Proficient in JavaScript (i.e. Being Able to Write at Least 10 Lines of Code That Work!)
  3. Know The Basics of a JavaScript Framework (Preferably React)
  4. Understand GitHub In-Depth
  5. Understand SEO Principles
  6. Enhance My Problem Solving Skills.
  7. Build Multiple Projects

I've always wanted a career in a field that is dynamic, requires ongoing learning, allows for skill and earnings improvement as one progresses, keeps me mentally busy, and can be done remotely. Let's just say I discovered the Holy Grail of my career.

For newbies like myself, I recommend sticking to one resource while learning to reduce confusion (Trust me, you will get confused at some point). You can get more information from a variety of other sources but stick to one syllabus. I utilize Freecodecamp.org as a resource, and I always contact Traversy Media for more information. This is what you should learn and where you can learn to get started in front-end development:

Stay with me on my career switch journey and you might learn something or some things.
